Cotton warp
Wool weft
TC2 Jacquard
This jacquard-woven diptych depicts open hands, each holding a delicate spiderweb, an image referencing a Hopi tradition in which spider silk is placed in a child’s palms as a blessing for future weaving skill. The motif foregrounds the hand not only as a physical site of labor but also as a conduit for cultural transmission. Here, the web functions simultaneously as a symbol of inherited knowledge and a tactile imprint of ancestral touch. The diptych engages with themes of intergenerational  pedagogy, material culture, and embodied practice, emphasizing how technical skill and cultural memory are passed through intimate gestures. By situating the hand as both subject and agent, these works interrogate the intersections of tradition, skill, and craft.
